Viognier Restaurant Reviews

San Francisco Chronicle
Viognier in San Mateo excels at main courses.
"While the appetizers start the meal off pleasantly, Dishman really shines on the seven main courses, where he alternates between rustic and refined presentations." – Michael Bauer

"Don't let the fact that it's on top of" a "deluxe grocery" " dissuade you", because this popular "destination" never fails to "blow the socks off" San Mateo "foodies" - and it's evident that the "new chef" "takes advantage " of the market's proximity, as "salads glisten with freshness", meats taste like they came "directly up the stairs" from the butcher and the menu itself is "ever-changing"; the "crisp", "caring" staff includes an excellent sommelier adept at "stellar wine" pairings.

"Like fine wine, some restaurants improve with age. Such is the case with Viognier, the Draeger's Market mainstay that now stands on solid terroir thanks to a new toque in the open kitchen. The chef is taking aim at consistency and creative flavor combinations in contemporary American fare made from largely local and sustainable ingredients. Menu highlights may include the creamy bed of bourbon-whipped sweet potatoes, with a crispy-skin duck breast and persimmon brunoise.

Despite a fresh face at the stoves, the second-floor dining room is filled with the same San Mateo suit and tie crowd who blend well into the atmosphere, which is refined but a touch corporate. Opt for a warmer seat in a booth by the central fireplace with views of the pizza oven."

"There are not a lot of alternatives for high end dining in San Mateo, making this one of the best bets...the quality rivals many places in San Francisco charging more."

"This was our first visit and we absolutely loved it! The service was extremely attentive but not overbearing."
